What are christmas customs, and foods in ecuador?
I have a spanish project, and we’re supposed to research on ecuador christmas customs, and christmas foods, etc.
Colorful processions take place on Christmas Day in Ecuador as the people who live in the mountains dress in their finest clothes and ride brightly arrayed llamas down to the ranches of their employers.
The ranch will have a presebre (manger scene) and the guests will bring gifts of fruit and produce to lay before the image of the Christ Child. Children often make speeches to the Holy Infant, asking for blessings upon their family and their livestock.
A huge outdoor fiesta will take place (it’s summertime in December in Ecuador) with much singing and dancing. The ranch owners will distribute Christmas gifts to all the employees and their families.
The ranch Christmas dinner will usually consist of roast lamb, baked potatoes, and brown sugar bread. In the cities, turkey is the preferred main course.
For others, there is public gatherings of prayer, hymns, religious poetry accompanied by incense and hot chocolate and cookies. (Hot chocolate in the middle of summer may sound unappealing, but it’s the tradition that counts!)
On Christmas Eve, families enjoy the Cena de Nochebuena, which traditionally includes stuffed turkey or chicken, grapes and raisins, salads, rice with cheese, local produce and wine or chicha.
Once the children are asleep, parents leave their presents at the foot of their beds. At midnight, the Misa del Gallo attracts huge numbers. This mass is a lenghty affair.
Christmas Day is a family day, with gifts and visits.
Following the Christmas celebratiions, Ecuadorians create effigies or dolls stuffed with hay and fireworks. These figures are representations of disliked people, national or local officials, famous people or folkloric characters and will be ignited on New Year’s Eve, at the Fiesta de Año Viejo.

DIY Christmas Gift Basket Ideas
It is not easy to select the Christmas gift that will please to everyone: we never know if the
gift will be appreciated by its recipient.

So, what about a homemade Christmas gift basket? It is an excellent way to save money on the
cost of the basket and products included. You even do not have to buy the basket.
Gift baskets can be easily made out of wooden boxes, briefcases made of leather or vinyl, or
shoe boxes nicely decorated…
If the products you plan to include in the basket are too expensive, you will be able to reduce
their number and save more money.
Here are some Christmas gift basket ideas.
“Rustic Gourmet”:
Varnish a wooden wine case, use a “rustic oak” tinted varnish
Fill the case with decorative straw or unbleached silk or crepe paper
Add the following products:
– Three bottles of wine (red, rose and white),
– A pot of fat liver,
– 2 legs duck confit,
– A pot of deer pate,
– A pot of wild boar,
– Three jars of wine jelly (red, rose and white),
– A pot of onion confit,
– A pot of truffles.

“I Love Chocolate”:
Use a metallic box,
Fill it with pink silk or crepe paper

– Boxes of fruit, flower or citrus flavoured sugar
“Espana Por Favor”:

Surround the box with a wide colored ribbon

ok, first of all natives DO NOT celebrate xmas. you see, xmas is a christian celebration and natives here have are politeistas, meaning they have different and many gods, therefor they do not celebrate xmas. there are natives that celebrate it though, but they aren’t “pure” since they have changed the true and real guatemalan traditions created by mayans (acient culture who lived here, mayans are to guatemala what aztecas are to mexico). so if there is some one who is 100% mayan and he still celebrates only mayan festivities they won’t celebrate christmas.
now, if you are talking about the “modern” society and non natives i can completely answer that to you:

we celebrate christmas on the 24, just like americans.
why is the nativity scene important to them?
because christmas is about celebrating when Jesus was born, most of the people in Guatemala are catholic and Catholics loves images, statues, etc. Catholics worship virgin Mary too so Jesus and Mary are important to them, and since christmas is celebrate the nativity of baby jesus they have the costume to make the scene with little statues called “imagenes”.
