There are thousands of common phrases in english eg. to be sent to coventry, etc. I notice that I use these phrases every day. They must be very difficult to understand for non-English speakers. I am learning Spanish and French. Are there phrases in these languages that I am missing?

Actually, English is relatively standarised, globally, because of wide influence and colonial history.That means educated speakers are aware of coloqualisms in their own speech and consequently avoid it when speaking to others. Movies often bring slang into the living rooms of speakers on the other side of the earth.
