Any Good Inexpensive Restaurants In NYC?
Does anyone know of any good restuarants in nyc? Something like italian cusine , or Spanish food
If you like Spanish food (from Spain, not Mexico – it’s an entirely different cuisine), Costa del Sol on 50th Street and Ninth Avenue is wonderful – for $25, you get a complete dinner with a ton of choices – AND IT’s GOOD! You get a choice of soup or salad – (I never order salad when there’s another choice, so I can’t comment). My favorite soup is the Caldo Gallego – from Galecia Spain – a delicious hearty soup with bacon, chorizo sausage, white beans, kale and other vegetables; you can also order the cold gazpacho or a chicken soup with noodles. You have a choice of more than twenty entrees – at least six different shrimp dishes – my favorites are the very lightly floured shrimp with wine sauce and the garlic shrimp – HUGE portions. You can also order salmon, paella, a whole lobster with butter sauce, various chicken dishes, mixed seafoods, veal., pork chops. These come with saffron rice and string beans – large platters on the table for everyone. You also get dessert and coffee – the cheesecake is good, but you can have flan or rice pudding or icecream. As if all this food weren’t enough of a bargain, if two of you order this three course dinner, you can get a bottle of red or white wine for only $6 more ($3 each)

Inexpensive Italian restaurants with excellent food:
Near Union Square: Via Emilia on East 21st Street and Park Avenue. Appetizers are unusual and outstanding – gnocco fritto – large platter of Italian coldcuts served with delicious little fritters; tigelle (not served in too many places) hot biscuits with proscuitto and melted cheese; wonderful soups, good pastas, fish is always fresh. Some desserts are outstanding.

Excellent pastas – I especially love their clam sauce, they, too, make tigelle, can get very crowded on weekends.

In the Village: Sapore on Greenwich Avenue and Perry Street – Lunch here has to be the biggest bargain in New York – $6 for soup or salad, coffee and a main dish, including good pastas – $3.00 more and you can have excellent fried calamari or grilled salmon as an entree. This is a very small cramped restaurant, but, in warm weather, there’s lots of pleasant outdoor seating.

Seafood Soup
When seafood soup is served to start off a meal, it might be a light broth with a few small cubes of fish and perhaps a hint of chives or parsley; or it might be a small bowl of rich creamy bisque or thick North American chowder flavored with milk and cream or with tomatoes. At Mexican seafood restaurants, I’ve also had chowder-like first-course fish soups, but they were lighter and spicier than their New England counterparts.
Add vegetables to a seafood soup, and serve it with rice, noodles or hearty bread, and it becomes substantial enough to play the role of a main course. A mildly seasoned seafood soup that we savored at a Honduran restaurant owed its rich texture and luscious flavor to coconut milk; served with a generous mound of rice, it was a meal in a bowl. Coconut milk often enriches Thai seafood soup entrees, like a satisfying one I ate at a pan-Asian restaurant; it contained noodles, mushrooms and green onions, and was pungent from hot peppers and tangy from lime juice. An usual and very tasty central Vietnamese seafood curry soup that I sampled was embellished with quail eggs, peanuts, noodles, green onions, cilantro leaves and fried onions, and served with a large fried sesame cracker. People use ingredients with which they are familiar. I’ve even made a tasty fish soup supper by cooking cubes of salmon in a pot of vegetable soup.
Most Westerners associate seafood soup with Mediterranean cuisine, which includes many fish soups in addition to the bouillabaisse of France and the ciuppin of Italy. Spanish, Greek, North African and Lebanese cooks all make fish soups matching the produce of the Mediterranean with the region’s popular flavors – olive oil, garlic, onions, tomatoes and aromatic herbs.
Because fish cooks rapidly, fish soups are easy to prepare and are ready in less time than most main-course soups. They’re great for weight watchers, as they can be fairly low in fat. For a festive version, you can use a little oil to sauté the vegetables and flavor the broth, but for an everyday soup, you can simply simmer the vegetables along with the fish.
My favorite types of fish for soup are those that do not fall apart easily, such as sole, cod or halibut. But as long as the fish is fresh, even if it does not remain in neat chunks, the soup will still taste delicious. Flavors range from boldly-seasoned soups with lots of spice to delicate ones that highlight the fish’s natural taste. Hi! I suggest the following:
- See High Line Park — an elevated Park in the Meatpacking District. They also put on free guided walking tours every Saturday.
- Go to the Top of the Rockefeller Center (Top of the Rock) rather than the top of the Empire State. The views are better & the lines are shorter. You can wait up to 3+ hours in the line to get to the top of the Empire, and when you get to the top, the Rockefeller Center blocks the views of Central Park.
- Take a (free) self-guided tour of the New York Public Library. This is where the Sex & the City movie was filmed. Then sit outside at Bryant Park after wards.
- Take a tour of the Brooklyn Brewery – it’s free and lots of fun
- Spend a day at FAO Schwartz on Central Park South or Toys R Us in Times square – these two toy stores are HUGE
- Go to the Rose Center for Earth & Space for a show in 3D
- Take a free walking tour: The Village Alliance, http://www.villagealliance.org/ offers free walking tours of Greenwich Village and the Central Park Conservancy http://www.centralparknyc.org/visit/tours/guided-tours/ offers free walking tours of Central Park. You can also take a free tour of the Federal Reserve Bank, which is actually pretty cool
- Go to the Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden in Astoria, Queens – this is the oldest Beer Garden in NYC (100 years old!) It’s a pretty easy subway ride from Manhattan. Just take the N or Q trains to Astoria Boulevard. Check out HopStop.com for subway directions. It’s like Map Quest for Public Transport.
- Ride the Staten Island Ferry, it’s free and lots of fun. You also get great views of the Statue of Liberty.
- Go to Calle Ocho on the Upper West Side for Sunday Brunch (they have unlimited sangria w/purchase of entree).
- Get a burger at Shake Shack (a Danny Meyer burger joint) in Madison Square, hands down NYC’s best burger place. The lines tend to be long, but it’s definitely worth the wait!
- Sit in the lobby of the Waldorf Astoria and bring a coffee. The couches are really comfy and the lobby is spectacular.
- Get a cupcake at Magnolia Bakery
- See Dylan’s Candy Store — opened by Bob Dylan’s daughter

- Go to the NY Skyride, it’s the only virtual aerial simulator in NYC
- Take a double decker sightseeing tour of NYC – I know this is kind of cliche, but it’s lots of fun

- Go to Canal Street in Chinatown — This is where you can find “designer” handbags for $40.
