Spanish Customs – They Don’t Go Barefoot in Spain
Did you know Spaniards never go barefoot?
I’ve been living in Spain for almost twenty years. My wife is Spanish, my colleagues are Spanish, my customers are Spanish and by businesses are Spanish. Over these years I think I’ve learned quite a bit about “being Spanish”.
If you want to get into the under-exploited fast-growing Spanish market, you need to know more than just speaking Spanish. You need to understand Spanish customs, Spanish etiquette and spanish business culture. Otherwise, you’ll just be another American trying to “sell Spanish”.
Here are just a few realities I’ve observed all over the Spanish-speaking world (if you call them prejudices, you don’t live in Spain):
- People aren’t in as big a hurry.
- People aren’t as ambitious
- Given a choice, most Spanish businessmen prefer a big house to a big business.
- Spanish customers seldom complain.
- Spanish businessmen don’t get technology.
- It’s harder to gain a Spaniard’s trust.
- Once you’ve earned a Spanish customer he’s tends to be very loyal.
Doing business with the Spanish-speaking world means getting into their mindset. It takes a bit longer to build up a trusting relationship, but once its built you can be confident in maintaining it very easily. To do this, I suggest making more emphasis in concepts like “security” and “ease of putting into practice”. Remember, your arguments for “extraordinarily high profits” and “blinding fast responses” won’t have as high of an echo in these markets.
Last but not least, if you’re from the States and are targeting the Spanish or Latin American markets you have one great advantage. Even though they may often disparage our culture (often with just cause), when it comes to business by default they think we’re smarter than anyone else. As ridiculous as it may seem, my slightly American accent and my yankee “aura” have been great professional tools for me in Spain. Try to fit in and understand their culture, but don’t forget to be American. They may at times make fun of you (especially when you answer the door barefoot) but they will almost always value your opinions.

By the way, it’s true. The vast majority of Spaniards only go barefoot at the pool, the beach or in bed. Answering the door barefoot would be considered at the best eccentric and at worst rude.
If you see someone barefoot on the street, you can bet someone just stole his shoes!

I am an old rancher on the Mexican border. My family has ranched here since 1908. I’ve been looking at some of these answers. 99% of these people don’t have any idea what they are talking about.
These mexicans have changed. 50 years ago, they were all good people and I liked them. They lived with us and taught me spanish and many good ways and customs. They and us depended on each other and I made good friends with many of them. They worked hard and never stole from us. All of my good old mexican friends are dead now. I miss them.
Now, they are bad. I wouldn’t give a nickel to any of them now. I don’t know what happened. They are mean and bad. About 10 to 15 years ago they started stealing from us and got mean and don’t want to be friendly any more.
Do you really know the new immigrants?
I work as a CBP Officer on the border everyday helping out new Immigrants and turning back people who do not have a legal right to be here. So, yes I feel I am up to date on Immigration policy and can speak in this forum. And please note, when I say illegal in this forum I mean everybody, not just people from Mexico. We send back people from Asia, Europe, Canada, Australia, The Middle East and Mexico. If you are here illegally we are very “equal opportunity”
I here what you are saying. There seems to be a bigger sense of entitlement people feel they have whenever we send them away. We tried to deny a man for being a public charge (he hadn’t paid his $47,000 hospital bill from his last stay, that’s a problem). The first thing his green card holder son did was call Senators complaiing about us and how we couldn’t do that. Well, yes we could, but you would be surprised how quick management will crumble when they get phone calls from not one but four angry Senators telling us to let this person stay in violation of the very INA they wrote.
We tried to send home a man from the Middle East who was certainly up to no good (the suitcase full of information talking about the greatness of 9/11 was our first clue). He missed his first flight home because he got on the phone to the consulate to complain about how we were being unfair. The Supervisor was too chicken to tell him to hang up, get on the plane and GTFO. We wouldn’t dare have a complaint against us.
I walk down the street and I see protests where people are saying “I am Illegal, so what!!!” Well, I’ll tell you what’s up as I kick you out. Of course I do not have the legal authority inside the border, and we wouldn’t dare let local police do anything, which helps build this culture of entitlement.
Again, I am more than willing to help legal immigrants into this country. I do it everyday. But when I see someone entering this country in violation of federal law, then demanding that I give them everything, I am more than a little fed up.
