Which language software is better: Rosetta Stone or Tell Me More?
I’ve been thoroughly researching various language instruction software, ( I’m trying to learn Spanish ) and I’ve narrowed it down to Rosetta Stone and Tell Me More. They’ve both received good reviews it seems.
But I just can’t decide which one to choose… Any suggestions?
I tried Rosetta Stone for Spanish. It was effective to learn basic words and sentences. It does not have any grammar or conjugation instructions though so it will be very hard to go beyond the basics with it
My college uses TeLL me More, by Auralog. I found it more complete and less repetitive. It covers not only the basics, but also intermediate or advanced level. My goal was to become fluent so it was perfect for me. It has a lot of different activities: picture/word association, videos, dialogues,…, includes also grammar and conjugation. It has also more content than Rosetta Stone as far as level and number of hours of learning. Their speech recogntion is great so you can have a dialogue with the computer. You should also compare the prices. Rosetta Stone is more expensive, especially if you look at the number of hours of learning. TeLL me More goes up to Advanced and has 950 hours of learning, Rosetta Stone only goes up to Intermediate and has 450 hours of learning, even with their 2 packages.
The best way to learn a language would be through immersion, visiting these countries. Learning a language will require some time. In addition to software, you can have books which are useful as well. Audio CDs like Pimsleur for instance might help you out but you cannot get any feedback on your pronunciation so I did not like it so much.

The other great thing is that you can work at your own pace and not have anyone tell you that you are going too slow. Learning through this software is very rewarding and enjoyable.

How effective are Rosetta Stone courses?
I am thinking of investing in a Rosetta Stone course to help me learn Spanish more efficiently. Rosetta Stone has had great reviews, but just how easy and quickly can you learn a language using the software?

I “pulled some strings” a couple days ago and got Rosetta Stone (all the languages). Last night I was playing around with German but I also played around with the Spanish a little (I already have a strong Spanish background from highschool/college courses and I wanted to see how the program teaches it).
The way it works is really cool — it shows a phrase with four photos. You pick the photo that matches the phrase. The program seems to work on self discovery and piecing things together — like immersion. It’s really simplistic.
The only potential issue I see is that there are no formal grammer lessons. I don’t know if I’ll just pick up the grammer or not. I did pick up a lot of vocab very quickly . . .
Practicing is really relaxing too — like a game.
All that aside, I would not pay what they are asking for this program —- and I’m extrememly interested in languages (having studied Latin, Japanese, and spanish in college).
