Career Help?? I need some advice?
I want to be a spanish-english/portuguese-english translator when i am older!I am also trying to self educate myself as well. I am 19 and i speak write and read spanish. I am working on my portuguese now. I love portuguese alot more!!! What should i be doing now to help me with this?? I know that it is a lot of work!!! I am reading books! I know that they say that i should right and expand my vocabuary. But i dont know what to write?? They also said that i should concentrate on the area that i want to trans late. i would like to be a court translator or do something with law!!! I lke helping people too.

I would start with checking my English spelling when posting questions on Yahoo. Next I would check on the Internet to find some student in Brazil or Portugal to correspond with via email so you can practice writing. Next you should check out where you can get certification as a translator.

How can I join the military as a linguist or translator?
I am a foreign student who is fluent in French, English, Spanish and Portuguese. I would like to join the US military as a linguist or a translator.
Can I still join it if I want to keep my foreign citizenship? I am not joining to gain any military benefits. I just want to serve the country that gave me the opportunity to get my college education. I am grateful for the opportunity that I get here as a scholar and I would like to give back.
I will graduate in 2011.
How long do I have to stay in the military and how long will it take me to get my training?

Hi! Unfortunately you do have to be a US citizen to join as a linguist. I had dual citzenship from birth and had to renounce my foreign citizenship in order to become a linguist. The languages are taught at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA and the courses range from 25 weeks for languages such as Spanish to 47 weeks for Farsi and Russian all the way to 63 weeks for Arabic. Your enlistment period would depend on which branch of service you join.
